| Peanuts like long, hot summers and soil that's neutral to slightly alkaline. The plants resemble small sweet pea bushes and grow 10-20 inches high. After the bright yellow flowers fade, a 'peg' (shoot like structure) develps at each flower's base, grows down into the soil and develops peanuts underground. The soil must be light textured to admit penetration by the pegs. (Sandy soil is ideal.) Plant nuts two inches deep about 10 inches apart for 'Jumbo Virginia' seeds or 4 inches apart for 'Spanish' varieties. Peanuts take 110-120 to mature. When the foliage yellows, dig the plants and hang them in a warm, airy room to cure for 2-3 weeks. Then strip the peanuts from the plants. |
