The Q&A Archives: Golden Globe Arborvitae

Question: I bought 2 of these arborvitae to plant. Will they survive the winter in my zone in Iowa. The tag says cold hardiness 0 to - 10
Why would the sell these in this area where it can get much colder in the winter.

Answer: According to your zip code, you are in USDA zone 4. Golden Globe Arborvitaes are rated hardy to zone 4. Thuja occidentalis 'Hetz Midget' (Dwarf Globe Eastern Arborvitae) is hardy to Zone 3. Thuja occidentalis 'Sudworthi' (Golden Eastern Arborvitae) is hardy to Zone 4. So unless you live in an area with a microclimate that gets extreme winter cold, either of these arborvitaes should survive your winter weather.
