The Q&A Archives: Poplars in TX Clay Soil

Question: Recently, I ordered a hybrid poplar tree. The description says it is hardy and will grow in any type of soil, but I have yet to see a poplar near Dallas, TX. We have dense black clay for soil. Will a poplar grow successfully here? Carolann Bixler The Colony, TX

Answer: Poplars are hardy trees and will grow just about anywhere. They do like rather damp soil but their roots are far ranging and will seek out water. Poplars grow quickly; their branches can tend to be brittle and break easily.
