We live in the country on a hill with pine trees and the lawn is mostly wild grass that we mow. Can we spread seed and fertilize and will the new grass come in and fill in where the old grass is.

You should be able to rake the area slightly so the seeds make good contact with soil and then broadcast your seeds. If the area is shady, choose a shade tolerant grass like one of the fescues. Just keep the area watered and the seeds should sprout in 7-10 days. Best wishes with your new lawn.
