Received bonsai plant as gift. It has a hard rock surface covering the roots, and I'm not sure how much water to put in there. you can't check the soil. I watered thoroughly and then poured excess off. Does that sound correct?

I'd remove the hard covering by immersing the pot in a container of water for about 15-20 minutes. The substance will soften and you can pull or peel it away. Then you'll be able to tell how much water it needs and how often to water. The substance is placed there to help anchor the plant during shipment and to help keep the potting soil moist. Now that you have it at home, it's safe to remove the substance.
