The Q&A Archives: Crazy Lantanna

Question: We have some Lantanna plants in our back yard and know how they grow. There is a Lantanna plant in our front yard that grew from seed. This plant is growing up and is over 12 feet tall. This is very unusual. It is about two years old. There is one in the back yard, not as tall or old. Can you tell me why it is growing like a tree instead of a normal Lantanna? Thank you, Ron

Answer: How awesome! Lantana is also called shrub verbena, and for good reason. That's because it can grow about 12-15 ft. tall and 10 ft wide when it's happy in its garden spot. We are used to seeing the low growing and trailing hybrids, but the species lantana can actually grow to gigantic proportions - as you have discovered! Although it is unusual to see this in the Phoenix area, it is quite common to see them this size in the Texas panhandle and in Florida. Enjoy your garden!
