In front of a hedge of yews, what type of annuals can be planted. I have tried petunias, zinnias, impatiens and they do not flourish here. I assume it is account of the acidity of the soil. Can you advise annuals that would survive here and what if anything I can do to the soil to amend it. Thank you for your help.

I wouldn't amend the soil for annuals because it might upset your yews. So, try growing acid loving annuals such as ornamental strawberries, Trillium , Begonia,
Caladium, or lobelia beneath your yews.
