| I have a beautiful zucchini squash plant that has produced many flowers but no squash. Do I need 2 plants in order for the plant to produce? |
| You won't need two plants for squash set. Squash plants have separate male and female flowers on the same plant. The first flowers to develop are male (they have straight stems behind the petals). As the squash plant matures it will set female flowers, as well. These have a slight swelling just behind the petals. When both male and female flowers are open the pollen needs to be transferred from the male to the female flowers. Insects usually do this for the plant but in the absence of insects, you can transfer pollen by cutting off a male flower and rubbing the inside of the flower to the insides of the open female flowers. This should result in complete pollination and the formation of a zucchini squash. Best wishes with your zucchini! |
