Your butterfly bush (Buddleia davidii) should be cut back in the very early spring, cut it down to about 6-10".  I like to do this on St. Patrick's Day (it's the right time of year for your area and, it's easy to remember!). These shrubs bloom on new wood, so pruning in this fashion you will get a shrub with lush, full, flower spikes.

Gaura doesn't require pruning, but sometimes you'll get a second flush of flower if you cut 1/3 of the top from the plant after the first round of bloom ceases.
