The Q&A Archives: Climing vines

Question: How do I get rid of climbing vines on a mason brick building that have been there for years.

Answer: Some vines leave behind "feet" (anchors) that will be hard to remove. You can pry these with a putty knife. You also can use laundry detergent and a stiff brush right after pulling the vines off. If the feet are left alone for a year or 2, they may dry up and disappear. I'm afraid only elbow grease, a stiff brush and a lot of patience are the only sure ways of completely removing the debris from the bricks.
