The Q&A Archives: Mums in the flower bed (Zone 5a)

Question: Hi!

I'm in the process of putting together my new flower bed and I'm doing mostly bulbs for spring & summer. Howerver I was thinking that I might try to plant mums for fall.

I'm wondering if the mums that are available for sale at my local Home Depot are suitable for planting. Will they come back next year if I mulch them? Is now the time to plant them?

Answer: Garden mums are an excellent plant for late season color. They will overwinter if you mulch them over the winter months. In fact, you can dig and divide them next spring and have even more plants to place in the bed. You can plant now or wait until early September. Enjoy your garden!
