I had to take down a large tree between 2 garages in my back yard area. Now the sun hits the lawn and we have been invaded by very fast growing

Bamboo is really difficult to eradicate. You need to dig up the roots or they will continue to send up shoots. You can try painting each of the shoots with Round Up. This is a vegetation killer and will kill anything it touches, so be careful when using it around your plants. Cut the shoot then immediately paint the stub with Round Up. The herbicide will be transported down to the root and should kill that particular root. If you are persistent, you should be able to control the bamboo.
