I've judged vegetables at the county fair and we don't compare the entries to one another but look for clean, healthy fruits and vegetables - and herbs, that are the right size and color for the category. Bigger is not always better in terms of herbs but can make a difference in melons and squashes. Rather than try to grow the biggest, try growing the best. That means your entries should be free of scars, insect pests, etc., should be the right color, and should be mature enough for harvesting. Rather than try to manipulate your plants with pesticides or growth hormones, just give them lots of sunshine, a side dressing of compost or manure, and enough water to grow into healthy plants. Good luck with your herbs!
