| I have a pot with several dracaena marginatas that I have had for several years. One is too tall, its touching the ceiling. I would like to cut it low such that new shoots come out the sides below the cut. I would also like to try and root the cutting. I tried this with another dracaena marginata in the same pot, and it did not work, no new shoots grew, and none of the cuttings rooted. Advice? |
| It may be that you tried at the wrong time of year. Cut the dracaena stem down now, while it is actively growing. With the top part, cut it into sections (each should root) and then use the very top (with a topknot of leaves) and plant it in a pot all on its own. The stem can be cut into 3-4 inch long sections and you can either set the bottom portions in moistened potting soil or let the cut ends callous over for 24 hours and then lay them sideways on moistened potting soil and cover over the ends with potting soil, leaving the centers exposed. I think you'll have great success with your cuttings. To hedge your bets you can dip the bottom ends in rooting hormone prior to setting them in the potting soil. Best wishes with your dracaena. |
