the soil in my yard is hard as rock. want to work on replacing lawn and planting a garden. what can I do to break up the soil easily and get it ready. Can't use a tiller because it's too rocky.

Since you can't really work the soil because of the rocks and the soil is obviously clay or it wouldn't be so hard, have you considered building raised beds or at least bringing in some top soil, and mounding it up into a raised bed? Gardening will be much easier and soil prep will be minimal because you'll be importing 3-way mix topsoil (3-way is garden soil, compost and sand). Doing this would really simplify things!
