Bird of Paradise is relatively insect free so I'm not sure how or why your houseplant has caterpillars. Perhaps an insect came in from outdoors and laid eggs? Caterpillars are relatively easy to control. Hand pick them or spray with Dipel or Thuricide (Bt). Bt targets caterpillars only and is harmless to people and pets.
