When your garden is finished for the season you should remove all the debris and then cover over the top of the soil with several inches of organic matter. This will help suppress weeds. In the early spring rototil or dig the organic matter into the soil, plant your seeds or veggie transplants and then cover over the bare soil between the plants with additional organic matter, with the intention of digging it in at the end of the growing season and adding more. Several years of incorporating organic matter into your garden bed will result in loamy soil rich in minerals. Enjoy your garden!
