| Major rose pruning should be done in the spring, just as buds begin to swell on the canes. To ready yours for winter you can wait until after the first hard freeze and then cut the longer canes back so they won't whip around in the wind. If your plants are very large you can prune them back to about knee level, but wait until they are completely dormant (after the first hard freeze). If you prune before they go into dormancy they may begin to grow in response to pruning and winter weather will damage them. Good luck with your roses. |
