gets a nice flower grows about 2in. then rots

If the squash looks perfect but falls off or rots from the stem end, it's due to poor pollination. If the squash is growing and begins rotting at the bottom end, it's a condition called blossom end rot which is brought about by inconsistent soil moisture. You can try a calcium spray (called Blossom Set), or you can try hand pollinating the flowers. Hope this helps!
