I have zoshia grass in sunny areas on sandy and coral ground. Grass does not retain moisture long enough to do any good.

It's difficult to keep sandy soil moist so you may want to try simply spreading a half inch of compost or peat moss over the turf. Water it in well and allow the zoysia to grow above it, then spread more over the top. A couple of years of adding compost or peat moss will help your soil retain more moisture and help your lawn grow lush and thick.
