Just bought a house with a pool! It's great except that the pool equipment (pump, filter; heater..) is exposed. I would like to surround it with plants so we are not staring at the equipment as we enjoy the pool. Can you give me suggestions of plants that are tall enough (3-4 feet), can survive both hot and cold weather, kind of bushy, can survive in pots... Thanks.

What fun for you! Plants will have a difficult time overwintering in containers so you might want to rethink your planting plan. Nandina domestica might fit that size range and will do well as a low maintenance evergreen planting with a somewhat tropical look. Or you can plant annual vines and attach trellises to the planting containers, knowing that they will climb up to hide the equipment during the spring and summer months but will have to be replanted every spring. Scarlet runner beans, (red flowers), hyacinth bean (purple flowers), cardinal flower (orange-red flowers), morningglories or sweet peas are all good choices for the area. Best wishes with your new landscape!
