Sloping hill behind house has dry clay soil, no sprinkling system but can be reached by hose. What plants for Hawaii will cover ground and need little care or water? |
All plants will need to be watered regularly until they become established, but some of the drought tolerant ground covers you might consider include Desert honeysuckle. This one can grow up to six feet. The flowers are a great orange color and are tubular in shape. Hummingbirds love them and are essential in pollinating this shrub. It really only needs a good watering twice a month to survive. Full sun is the best for growth but will do well in slight shade as well. Portulaca, ornamental grasses, sedum, thyme, lantana, Pink Dwarf Crown of Thorns (Euphorbia mili ?Pink Cadillac?), Foxtail Asparagus (Asparagus densiflorus?Myers?), Nehe (Wollastonia integrifolia), or Dwarf Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis?Prostratus?). Hope these suggestions are helpful. |
