The Q&A Archives: canna

Question: I have a canna which is in a pot in my backyard.
I have read to keep it moist.
Another source said to keep it on the dry side.

Which is right? About how much water per week for my 3 foot canna?
Thanks for your help.

Answer: As long as the soil drains well, you can water your canna 2-3 times a week, depending upon weather. I thoroughly soak the soil where my canna's are growing and then allow the top half inch of soil to dry out before watering again. Canna roots grow deeply so you'll want to apply enough water to deeply soak the area so the roots can take advantage of the moisture. If you're not sure, dig down into the soil a few days after watering. If the soil is moist an inch beneath the surface, you won't need to water for a few more days. If it is dry, it's time to water. Best wishes with your canna!
