| I planted Brussels sprouts plants in mid-May and they are growing okay but one plant seems to be flowering or seeding. I don't see any buds for the sprouts on any of the plants. This is my first try and I need information. How do you grow Brussels sprouts? |
| Brussels sprouts need about 100 days to mature, and they grow best in cool weather. If you have a long, hot growing season, Brussels sprouts are best planted very early in the spring so they will have a chance to mature before the hot weather sets in. Or, plant your seeds in July so the sprouts will develop in the cool autumn weather. Sounds as though one of your plants is 'bolting', or going to seed because of the weather. You can pinch out the top to stop the process and hope that sprouts develop on the stem. Expect the rest of your plants to develop seed heads, too. Why not plant some more Brussels sprout seeds now so you'll have a crop in late fall? A frost or two usually makes the sprouts taste sweeter. |
