| I have two small columnar pines in Pa on my Patio and this winter the deer stripped them bare, they are still alive and growing but have no greenery apart from the top of their 6' height, should I cut them down and will they grow green again? This Is the first year the deer have ever eaten these my alberta dwarf, hemlock and the boxwood. What can i do to prep for this Winter? |
| Sadly, pines won't regenerate needles once the branches are bare. As the trees grow, the bare trunks will look normal and natural, but that won't be for many years in the future. It might be better to simply replace them with healthy new specimens. There are lots of deer repellents on the market and you can try them all, but the sad fact is that hungry deer will eat almost anything and will ignore scare tactics and nasty tasting repellents. It might be that the deer population is just too large for the amount of food they can find elsewhere and you may need to deal with them from now on. A tall fence is about the only way to protect your landscape plants. Wish I had more encouraging news to share. |
