The Q&A Archives: Composting with Sunflower Seed Hulls

Question: Do sunflower seed hulls damage soil, grass, or trees? Can I dd sunflower seed hulls to my compost pile? I've heard they inhibit plant growth like black walnut does. Joyce Pence Clark Fork, ID

Answer: The hulls shouldn't be any problem; if you have a very thick layer they may smother the grass underneath, but they should decompose pretty quickly once the weather warms up. I'm not familiar with this problem with sunflower seeds. Just to be on thesafe side, you might want to keep them out of the compost pile Good luck with your garden..
