You can usually leave plants in their original containers for 2-3 years but they probably should be repotted after that amount of time. I'll include a list of plants that are considered non-toxic but it's still a good idea to keep children from eating them. As for attractive birds and butterflies, choose plants with bright flowers and you should have no problems. Here are the non-toxic plants: African Violet ? Saintpaulia species; Aluminum Plant ? Pilea cadierei; Air Plant ? Tillandsia species; Airplane Plant ? Chlorophytum comosum (a.k.a. Spider Plant); Aralia ? Aralia japonica (a.k.a. Fatsia); Artillery Plant ? Schlumbergera species; Coleus ? Coleus species; Cordyline ? Cordyline species (a.k.a. Spike Plant); Creeping Jenny ? Lysimachia nummularia (a.k.a. Gold Moneywort); Cymbidium orchid ?
