I'd like to know if it's possible to grow banana trees from seeds indoors in Sweden? How do I do it? What temperatures will it need etc? |
There are about 25 species of Musa, commonly known as the banana. They grow from rhizomes in tropical areas, and produce the everyday bananas we buy in the store. There are ornamental, or decorative, banana trees that develop unedible fruits with viable seeds. So the long answer to your question is, no you can't grow a real banana tree from seed, and yes, you can grow an ornamental banana tree from seed. Since Musa are tropical in nature, you'll need to provide warmth year round, bright light; direct sunshine is best, and lots of humidity. The plants grow to 25 feet so they're not good candidates for a livingroom, but would adapt very well to growing in a large greenhouse where temperatures are kept above 65F degrees. If you can obtain seeds, plant them just under the top of moistened potting soil and provide bottom heat. Good luck with your project! |
