Spring is the best time to start feeding Japanese maples. Since yours are in containers the safest way to feed without overfeeding and burning the roots of your trees is by using a half strength dilution of water soluable fertilizer such as Miracle Gro. Feed in April and then every 3-4 weeks during the growing season, with the last application in late August. Feeding this way will provide a constant source of minerals to your maples without the fear of burning the roots with excessive amounts of salts. Best wishes with your maples.
