Juniperus chinensis 'Hetzi Columnaris' is a very large, upright juniper cultivar with a very rigid, prickly feel to it. The foliage is a nice gray/green color - more green with a hint of gray to it. Commonly used as a privacy screen or windbreak. Heavy fruit/cone/berry producer, and has very aromatic foliage when rubbed or crushed. Enjoys full to part sun, and withstands a variety of harsh conditions. Very hardy variety. Makes an excellent screen / border planting. Good numbers of bluish purple berries in winter provide seasonal interest, and are a good contrast against the deep gray/green foliage. Height: 10-15 ft, Spread: 5-8 ft, Growth Rate: Moderate to fast (8"-16" avg per year), Sun Exposure: Full sun to partial light shade, Soil Preference: Average to sandy & acidic - will adapt to a wide range of soils. Needs good drainage.

Dig a hole just as deep but slightly wider than the nursery container and rough the soil up around the sides of the hole. Unpot your juniper by laying it on its side and gently pulling it out, then set it in the hole and fill in around the plant with soil. Tamp it down gently, then water thoroughly to help settle the soil. Water once each week to help the roots establish quickly.
