I'm a first time vegtable gardener. I have a small 6 X 3 patch with tomatoes, peppers and corn. Animals come in the night and eat my leaves (especially my corn). I think it's rabbits and chipmunks. I've used moth balls and mouse traps to no avail. Any tips for a rookie? |
Because your garden is small, you can easily place a barrier between the wildlife and your food crops. The least expensive approach is to drape bird netting over the plot and secure it to the ground with bent wire hooks. You should be able to remove it without too much difficulty when you want to enter the garden to weed or harvest. Or, you can cover your plants with chicken wire to exclude the animals. You can build individual cages for your plants, or cover the entire garden bed from top to bottom using PVC pipe as a frame. The important thing is to make sure the edges on the bottom are anchored securely or you may end up with a bunny or squirrel inside the cage! |
