My sister-in-law brought me a small mimosa tree from Georgia. I live in Ohio. My question is can I plant it outside or do I have to treat it as a house plant? I have seen trees at the Cleveland Zoo that look very much like the Mimosa and they are thriving in the out doors. |
There are many different varieties of Mimosa, the most common being the "Silk Tree Mimosa" (Albizia julibrissin). This is the one with those beautiful powder pink puffs. All of my references state this tree is only hardy to zone 7, but I live in zone 6 and they thrive here. You didn't give me your zip code so I'm not sure which zone you are in. I would bet you are in a similar climate, so I would go ahead and try it. Plant the mimosa in good, light soil in a full sun spot. Try to place it so it has some protection from the wind. |
