The Q&A Archives: pumpkins

Question: My pumpkins have all turned orange and the vines are dying. It's way too early for jack-o-lanterns or pumpkin pie. Will they keep if I pick them and put them in the garage or should we just cook them up?

Answer: If the pumpkins are not fully mature they won't store for very long. I'd allow the vines to die down completely before removing the pumpkins. Then see how hard the skin is by pushing against it with your thumbnail. If the skin is hard, the pumpkins may keep. If the skin is soft, you'll need to cook the pumpkins. Once cooked you can freeze the squash for making pies or pumpkin bread.
