I need to raise an organic garden & my garden is overwelmed with weeds such as clover & crab grass. Is there a easy solution to prevent the weeds from coming back w/o chemicals & the back breaking of pulling them in a huge garden? We can't keep up with them, they grow too fast! Also, is it okay to use shredded black & white newspaper on the garden? Is Ink safe?

Thanks for your help!

It's far easier to keep weeds from growing than to get rid of them once they have taken root, but you may be able take control by suffocating the weeds. Use cardboard or several thicknesses of newspaper to cover over the existing weeds. This should eliminate sunlight and suffocate the pesky weeds. Next spring get a jump start on the weeds by planting your veggies and then covering over the bare soil with several thicknesses of newspaper topped with straw or other organic material. At the end of the growing season you can dig these materials into the soil and replace with fresh. Most newspaper ink is soy based but you can phone your local newspaper just to make sure. Good luck with your garden.
