The Q&A Archives: I have 3-4 hundred Dafodills

Question: in my garden under a black walnut tree,I think they have been there 15-20 years, should i take them up & replant?

Answer: Daffodils tend to multiply and naturalize an area when left alone. The only downside is that they can sometimes fail to bloom if they are overcrowded. If your bulbs have been in the same spot for 15-20 years I don't see any advantage to digging and replanting them. You'll have to deal with the roots of the tree which could upset the tree. And, digging 3-4 hundred bulbs is a task that could take several weeks. I'd just leave well enough alone. If you have some bare patches you can always plant a few bulbs in the bare areas to help fill everything in. Enjoy your beautiful display!
