The Q&A Archives: branching shrubs??

Question: How do I get a shrub - forsythia -that I started to branch into a bush? It has only one well developed shoot that is several feet long.

Answer: You'll need to prune the stem back. There are latent buds along the stem and as soon as you pinch out the tip of the stem or cut off the top of the stem, you'll see new branches forming along the stem. Pinch out the stem tips as the plant branches out and it will develop more and more branches. Enjoy!
