The Q&A Archives: Compost

Question: Is it necessary to add soil to a compost pile?

Answer: It is not necessary to add soil to a compost pile. Soil contains lots of micro-organisms and is sometimes recommended to jump start a new compost pile. If your compost pile is active, you don't need to add soil. If it isn't cooking well, a shovelful of garden soil can add the microbes it requires to begin the decompostion process. Hope this answers your question.
