You can store your hosta roots in containers in an unheated garage, shed or cold frame. Simply dig and plant them in a container filled with moistened potting soil. Without any natural rain or snow they may need to be given a light watering occasionally. Without moisture to their root system hostas will not survive the winter. Or you can keep your pots outside. If you do so, tip them sideways and cover them with mulch. This is to prevent ice build up on top of your pot which during the freeze thaw cycle will cause root and crown rot.
