| I live in North/South Carolina border and I was able to grow papaya from seed. I transplanted the plant outside in full sun in the early spring. The trees are now about 5'tall. How do I protect these plants in the coming cold weather? Can you tell me how to care for them? |
| Papaya plants are not tolerant of freezing temperatures and are damaged or killed below 31?F. If your garden remains above freezing all winter long, your papaya will be fine. If you regularly get frost, I don't think the papaya will survive, even if you try to protect it. But if you're determined, you can try! Make a cylinder out of chicken wire, tall and wide enough to fit over the plant, plus about 6" all around. Fill the cylinder with shredded leaves or straw before the first frost of the season arrives. The insulation should help keep the trunk and roots from freezing. Hope it works in your garden! |
