is it necessary to repot my houseplant once I get it home or is it even better to leave it in the nursery pot?

Houseplants should be transplanted when they are pot bound. How long that will take depends upon the plant and the size of the pot it's in. Wait until the roots begin to escape through the drainage holes, then repot in the next sized pot. Enjoy your houseplants!
