The Q&A Archives: Poison Ivy

Question: How does poison ivy get to where it is, and never was before? What is a good way to remove poison Ivy?

Answer: Believe it or not, birds deposit the seeds of poison ivy and that's why it suddenly shows up where it never grew before. If possible, hand pull the plants, roots and all. Failing that, an herbicide containing glyphosate formulated for brush and applied (and possibly reapplied) according to the label instructions should do the job. A late summer, early fall application (while the roots are rebuilding reserves) can be more effective than a spring application. Be sure to read and follow label directions.
