| In early May I bought and planted some strawberries that had large pink flowers on them, as well as plenty of strawberries. I can't remember what these plants are called. However, now that they are transplanted into my garden (mulched in and mixed with sandy soil, according to directions with the plants) they produce lots and lots of pink flowers, but hardly any berries. In addition, they send off some runners. Should I be clipping the runners? How can I get these blooms to turn into berries? Thanks for your help. |
| You probably purchased a plant called 'Pink Panda'. It's a member of the Fragaria family, but a cross between a strawberry and a potentilla. Pink Panda's do produce edible berries, but they're not at all like real strawberries - kind of pulpy and bland in taste. Your plant is normally grown as an attractive ground cover, because of its inch-wide pink flowers. Expect only an occasional berry from your plants. Pink Panda is a vigorous plant that spreads by runners. If you clip off the runners, the plant will not multiply as rapidly, but it won't set more fruit as a result. |
