The Q&A Archives: fertilizing and caring for bouganvillas

Question: I have a bouganvilla planted in a basket. What fertilizer does it need? How often? What care does it need in winter?

Answer: Bougainvillea is considered a tropical plant and should be kept in an area above freezing during the winter months. Ideally, you will want to keep it between 50 and 65 during the winter and water it only lightly since it will not be actively growing. Until then, give it bright light indoors or full sun outdoors. Feed with a half strength dilution of water soluable ferilizer such as Miracle Gro every 3-4 weeks. Hope this information is helpful.
