Answer: I hope it is a superficial fungal growth rather than the fruiting bodies of a wood rot fungus. There is no treatment for a wood rot fungus. Try peeling or scraping the fungus off the branch. If it is soft, it may be a wood rot fungus. If it can be peeled off and the bark beneath it looks okay, it could simply be a lichen. This moss-like growth is common in areas with lots of summer rainfall. I've got my fingers crossed!
