I know watermelons grow underground but how can you tell when they are ready to be picked? I have a flower that has been there for awhile and it has closed now. I am not sure if I should dig underground to get a watermelon.

Potatoes and peanuts grow underground but watermelons grow above ground. You'll see the melons when they are developing. If the flower was pollinated it should develop a melon - but it's getting rather late in the year and it may not have a chance to mature before the weather gets cold. I'll cross my fingers for you.
