Watermelons need lots of sunshine, heat, and water in order to grow. They should do well in Riverside so I'm not sure what might be causing the problem with your watermelon plants. You can amend your soil with compost or aged manure prior to planting next spring. Compost or other organic matters will enrich the soil by adding nutrients and will also help loosen it so the roots of your plants can grow deeply. Hope this helps!
