Apples may begin to fall from the tree when they're ripe. Depending upon variety, it's usually late summer or early fall for green apples. You can try to pick an apple to see if it comes off easily. Grasp the apple, twist and push up. If it comes off easily, it's probably ripe. To check, cut it open - if the seeds are dark brown, the apple's ripe. If not wait a week or two and try again.
