The Q&A Archives: Pruning Areca Palms

Question: I have several 10ft or more areca palms around my backyard but they look very overgrown, how do I trim, prune them.

Areca palms pruned like a tree to control height. They have only one growing tip and if that tip is damaged, there will be no further new growth. However, there's no reason you cannot remove some of the lower fronds to expose the attractive trunks of your Arecas. With most palms you can remove all of the lower fronds. If you look at the very top of the plant and consider that to be 12 o'clock, you can remove any fronds that are below 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock. Hope this is clear enough!
