I have two Texas common fig trees and they are way too tall for me to get the figs when they rippen. Can I cut the branches off to a more convenient level. When is the best time to do this? Thanks so much for your help. Marsha Krueger |
Yes, you can prune your fig tree. Since the crop is borne on terminals of previous year's wood, you should avoid heavy winter pruning, which can cause loss of the following year's crop. It is better to prune immediately after the main crop is harvested, or with late-ripening cultivars, summer prune half the branches and prune the remainder the following summer. Enjoy your figs! |
