When is the best time to prune my dark purple smokebush and how low can I cut it. This is the first full year I've had it growing and some of the branches are almost 7 to 8 foot tall. Will it keep growing tall or is there a way to make it spread out wide?

Pruning will help keep it under control and also encourage a bushy growth habit. You'll want to wait until spring to prune or you'll miss out on the display of the plumes this fall and winter. Next spring prune all the branches back by one third. This will encourage new growth towards the center of the shrub. Prune each spring and eventually it will develop and compact, bushy shape. Enjoy!
